“This isn't freedom. This is fear.”
— Steve Rogers, Captain America: Winter Soldier. ![]() PERSONALITY
Steven Grant Rogers was born in the waning months of World War One on the Fourth of July, the anniversary of America's freedom from tyranny, and his beginnings has always instilled in him the need to prove himself, to fight his way through life. Health problems from scarlet fever to rheumatic fever to a bad heart and the fact that he was only 95 pounds and five foot four inches tall at 25 meant that Steve had to prove that he could do the things he wanted. He stood up for proper public behavior in a movie theater by taking the instigator to the alley way for a nice duel by fists. He risked prison and perjury for lying about his address to attempt to pass the draft board's medical exams even though he didn’t even try to lie about his medical problems. This determination brought him to the attention of Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who developed the super soldier serum in an attempt to stop HYDRA. Steve is willing to do what it took to stop bullies and he saw the war in Europe and the Pacific as instigated by bullies so he wished to prove himself as a soldier. This also comes into play during the events of The Winter Soldier, where Steve says that he is willing to pay the price for freedom, and Project INSIGHT isn't freedom. Nor is letting HYDRA run all over something good that Peggy Carter started to continue the work he started back in the forties, to keep the world free from those who want to control everyone and if that means he sacrifices himself, either by flying a plane into the ice to keep it from exploding over New York, or in taking hits from his best friend turned HYDRA weapon to keep him busy while others make sure that SHIELD and INSIGHT are completely dismantled and only stops fighting Bucky when Steve is assured that the job is done.Steve's outer self, the one where he punches his way through life, covers and protects his heart, his artist soul. He feels so much that he needs to keep that part of him safe by his reserve and cautious choices in friends. His innate goodness, honor, and loyalty are all forces compelling him to stand up for the little guy, for the innocents, for those who lack a voice. Steve willingly took a serum that made him as he was meant to be, to have his outside match his inside. To have the strength to back up his convictions, to have the presence to have his words listened to, to lead those who would follow. He also shields his inner self with a smart mouth, sass, and sarcasm, all tools he uses to avoid letting everyone see that he's really just the short guy from Brooklyn with a chip on his shoulder bigger than his head and with the heart bigger than his entire body. And above all, he doesn’t do his job for the glory or name, preferring to stay out of the limelight. He bailed on a medal ceremony after he freed the prisoners, and anytime he is around those who don’t know him, he’ll make himself smaller and less conspicuous as seen when he visits the exhibit on himself wearing a hat, and again when he visits Sam at the VA, he makes himself smaller by slouching, trying to not draw attention to the fact that Captain America is visiting. Though sometimes he could stand to use his words for himself more, since that would make his life easier, but then again, Steve's never been one to go the easy route, instead preferring to use his words as weapons with sass and sarcasm as much as his fists. Most of the time, when he fails to use his words, it’s involving his personal relationships. He’s not all that good with making friends. Or talking with women. But the friends he does make he’s loyal even past death for them, willing to do what it takes to stand up for them, even if it means fighting the world. Steve’s honor and principles of fairness, equality, and loyalty lead him to do whatever he can to keep true to himself, even if it means becoming a fugitive or tearing down a major world organization. Or punching aliens in the middle of New York City. Whatever it takes, he’ll do it as long as it does not interfere with his moral code. He’s also stubborn about his beliefs, which lead to conflicts with his team mates, but that stubbornness also enables him to keep going even when the going gets hard. And it gets hard as he increasingly grows disillusioned with the methods his new team mates and allies use, from Fury's keeping vital mission info from him, to Nat keeping secrets and lying to him. And of course, finding out HYDRA infiltrated SHIELD, and that he worked closely with people who followed HYDRA and were working towards taking over the world. Steve doesn't handle dishonesty, secrecy, or disloyalty well. He tends to make a scene. Steve has to earn his way, not be given it, always used to fighting for what he wants. Which is why he chafed at being a figurehead raising money when he could be on the ground fighting. Of course he went AWOL, but as he returned from a suicide mission with rescued POWs and enemy tech and intel, that made his rebellion a bit better to swallow for those who didn't know what the kid from Brooklyn could do if given the chance. His life has been a near constant underestimation of what he could do. He survived childhood even with his illnesses. He actually joined the Army despite his previous failures (which also speaks to his stubbornness and determination to follow his ideals). He survived a very painful transformation which added eight inches and 135 pounds onto his body while he was fully awake and aware. He broke into a HYDRA facility and freed the POWs kept there, and brought them all back to base. He survived being frozen for almost seventy years. He adapted to a world that he had very little context for. He went back to war a little over two weeks after he woke up. Learned the quirks and skills of his new team mates, even when they were fighting with each other more than with who they were supposed to be working against. Led them in the fight in New York even when they were grossly outnumbered. Stood up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves when he led the dismantling of SHIELD in an effort to stamp out HYDRA because HYDRA is antithetical to his beliefs and values. Steven Grant Rogers is a man out of time, but the world needs a little old fashioned, especially if it means that they live free to do as they wish and not fit into a mold designed by others. Powers
